8M

2016, Poland and Argentina

Addressing the precariousness of female labor, workplace harassment, undervalued domestic work, and gender-biased justice.

The roots of the 8M - International Feminist Strike movement trace back to 2016, fueled by protests in Poland and Argentina against the criminalization of abortion and the murder of Lucia Perez, respectively. The 8M catalyzed a global mobilization, redefining the concept of “strike” through the international feminist strike. This designation became a term that transcends labor movements, channeling feminist revolt to the streets, connecting to the history of intersectional feminism, globalizing feminisms, and empowering women as political agents. In 2017, the movement gained transnational prominence with demonstrations across the globe, solidifying in 2018 with a locally recognized international impact. In Portugal, although the roots of the 8M can be traced back to 2017, it wasn’t until 2019 that the movement truly manifested as a nationwide strike, an expression that persists.
